After various cancellations due to lack of swell and proper conditions, the FSPR successfully launched their first event of the 2009 contest season taking advantage of a small push of northwest swell which lit up almost every spot in Rincón this past weekend. The fun peeling waves of Domes, The Point at María’s, and Indicators were all used and abused by competitors throughout the two day gathering of over 170 competitors in more than 80 heats from 13 categories which required a double beach set up in order to accommodate the large turnout.
Finals were run at Domes on Sunday the 25th in less than favorable conditions in the waist to shoulder-high range. Once again, top grom, Héctor Santamaría, flew over the competition taking home first place in the Jr. Men’s division, completing eight out of 10 aerials attempted in a heat, while in the process scoring the only perfect ride (10.0) of the entire contest. On the other hand, Montauk’s surf phenom, Quincy Davis, took both Jr. and Open Women’s divisions with, as usual, an amazing performance well beyond her years. Future star Eduardo Alfonso was perhaps the happiest surfer in Town on Sunday as he claimed double victories in both Keiki and Menehune divisions. Still, the Open Men’s Final proved to be the highlight of the day with four of Puerto Rico’s top guns battling it out in the water: Wilfredo Deliz, Eric Torres, Carlos Cabrero, and Brian Toth. After the horn blew and the waters calmed, it was Toth, the island’s top ranked professional, who dominated the affair, followed by young gun Torres in 2nd, westside veteran Deliz in 3rd and old-school powerhouse Cabrero in 4th.
The FSPR would like to express their gratitude to all sponsors, members, staff, competitors and surfing fans for making this event possible, and particularly wants to thank Playero, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Department of Sports and Recreation for their support.
The FSPR is totally stoked with the overall success of the contest and would like to use this opportunity to invite everyone to their next event to be held in March at Los Tubos, Manatí. There will be a waiting period to ensure good conditions. Stay connected to surfcaribe.com for more updates!
